The Outliner
The Outliner shows your documents as rows in a spreadsheet, with their synopses and metadata laid out in columns. Where the Scene Board is for seeing your story, the Outliner is for working through it methodically — scanning status, spotting short scenes, and editing summaries in bulk. Switch to it from the editor’s view switcher.
Columns
Section titled “Columns”Each row is a document. Columns can include its title, synopsis, word count, label, status, compile inclusion, and any of your custom metadata fields. Choose which columns are visible so the view shows exactly what you’re working on — outline status during planning, word counts during drafting, revision metadata during edits.
Sorting and filtering
Section titled “Sorting and filtering”- Sort by any column — title, word count, status, or modified date — to bring the rows you care about to the top.
- Filter by label, status, compile inclusion, custom metadata, or revision state to focus on a slice of the manuscript.
- A quick text filter narrows rows by what you type.
Editing inline
Section titled “Editing inline”The Outliner is editable, not just a report. Click to rename a document, write or revise its synopsis, change its label or status, and set metadata values — all without opening the document. It’s the fastest way to write synopses for a whole chapter in one pass.
Bulk actions
Section titled “Bulk actions”Select multiple rows to act on them together — handy for setting a status across a set of scenes or moving them as a group.
Saved views
Section titled “Saved views”Save a configuration of columns, sort, and filters as a named view you can switch between — for example a “Drafting” view that shows word counts and a “Revision” view that shows status and revision metadata. (Free-text search stays out of saved views, since it’s a momentary query rather than part of a reusable layout.)
The Outliner, Scene Board, and Canvas are three lenses on the same documents — a change in one shows up in all of them.
